Name: Artemisia tridentata - Ericameria teretifolia Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is rare in Death Valley National Park in California and was sampled at upper elevations of the Joshua Flat area in the southern Great Basin. Elevation ranges from approximately 1790 to 2340 m, and averages 1986 m. Due to a limited sample size, limited plot data exist, although all three plots are at an easterly aspect, and slopes range from gentle to somewhat steep (1-24°). Soils include loams and are derived from sandstone. Stands occur in the southern Great Basin along intermittently flooded upper elevation washes to rocky erosional highlands. Vegetation forms an open shrub canopy in which the shrub cover ranges from 19 to 31%. An emergent tree layer is absent, and the herb understory is variable and ranges from 2 to 8% cover. Artemisia tridentata is dominant in the shrub canopy along with Ericameria teretifolia, which is characteristic. Other shrubs often present include Coleogyne ramosissima, Ephedra viridis, and Menodora spinescens. Commonly associated herbs at low cover but with high richness include Achnatherum hymenoides, Bromus rubens, Calochortus kennedyi, Elymus elymoides, Eriogonum ovalifolium, Phlox stansburyi, Pleuraphis jamesii, and Sphaeralcea ambigua.
