Name: Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is found in ranges and mountains in the southern Great Basin in California and Nevada and also in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada in California. It forms an open shrub canopy (11-28% cover) dominated by Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana with other shrubs often present, such as Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus and Grayia spinosa. If Purshia tridentata is present, it has low cover and does not codominate. Other common shrubs may be present. Herbaceous cover is generally sparse (<10% cover) but variable and diverse. Occasional emergent trees such as Yucca brevifolia may be present at low cover (<2%) at lower elevations or Pinus monophylla and Pinus jeffreyi at higher elevations. Stands occur at upper elevations from interfluves between mountains to upper slopes that transition to Pinus monophylla woodlands. Sites are on various topographic slope positions, with gentle to steep slopes (1-35°) and variable aspects at 1515 to 2926 m elevation. Soils are often sandy but also variable and are derived from different substrates such as alluvium, granodiorite, rhyolite, and sandstone.
