Name: Atriplex hymenelytra Sparse Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This sparsely vegetated association is found scattered along gravelly bajadas and hillslopes across the Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin in California and Nevada, and extends into the Colorado/Sonoran Deserts of California. Vegetation is characterized by scattered shrub cover (0.5-4%) with Atriplex hymenelytra present. Occasional Ambrosia dumosa, Echinocactus polycephalus, or Larrea tridentata may be present. Herbaceous cover ranges up to 6% and includes various species such as Eriogonum inflatum, Atrichoseris platyphylla, Cryptantha spp., Geraea canescens, Plantago ovata, and Distichlis spicata. Stands occur on typically usually hot, dry alluvial fans at low to mid elevations (-50 to 950 m). Slopes range from flat to steep (0-35°) on all landscape positions with primarily hot westerly aspects. Sites often have a well-developed desert pavement and may be dissected by small washes on older alluvial landforms, or on nutrient-poor gypsum or volcanic hills. Soils are usually a mixture of loam and sand and are derived typically from alluvium and sedimentary substrates such as sandstone, gypsum, and less frequently volcanic types including basalt and rhyolite.
