Name: Baccharis sergiloides - Prunus fasciculata - Rhus trilobata Wet Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is found at mid to upper elevations in desert mountain drainages and canyons in the Mojave Desert, including Mojave National Preserve in California, and in the southern Sierra Nevada including canyon drainages of Jawbone Canyon. It forms an open to intermittent shrub canopy (19-39% cover) that is characterized by Baccharis sergiloides codominant with Prunus fasciculata and Rhus trilobata. Other shrubs often present include Acacia greggii, Brickellia californica, Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa, Ericameria linearifolia, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Eriogonum wrightii, Gutierrezia microcephala, Lotus rigidus, and Yucca baccata. The herbaceous cover is variable, ranging from 2-22% cover and frequently includes Elymus elymoides, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and exotic annuals Bromus tectorum and Erodium cicutarium. Nonvascular plants include mosses. Scattered emergent trees such as Pinus monophylla and Juniperus osteosperma may be present with up to 3% cover. Stands occur in spring-fed mountain drainages and canyon bottoms with sand and bedrock stretches on gentle to somewhat steep slopes (2-16°) with variable aspects at approximately 1100 to 1500 m elevation. Of the stands sampled, many have flowing water present during spring and summer. Soils are primarily sand derived from granodiorite.
