Name: Baccharis sergiloides / (Muhlenbergia rigens, Typha domingensis) Wet Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This wet shrubland association is found intermittently at mid to upper elevations in desert ranges in the Mojave Desert of California and Nevada, and also in the southeastern Sierra Nevada including alongside drainages of Jawbone Canyon. It is characterized by an open to dense shrub canopy (10-77% cover) dominated by Baccharis sergiloides with a sparse to moderately dense (1-49% cover) and often diverse herbaceous understory composed of wetland species, especially Muhlenbergia rigens, Eleocharis spp., Juncus macrophyllus, Juncus mexicanus, and Typha domingensis. Acacia greggii is often present with lower cover along with many other associated shrubs. Scattered emergent Prosopis glandulosa trees may be present with up to 5% cover. Nonvascular plants include mosses and algae. Stands occur along mountain drainages ranging from 900-1700 m elevation, primarily in bedrock and boulder-strewn drainages and canyon bottoms with sandy stretches and bouldery ravines interrupted by vertical bedrock waterfalls. Sites were gentle to somewhat steep (4-20°) slopes with variable aspects. Most of the sampled stands have flowing water during spring and summer. Soils are primarily sandy alluvium derived from a variety of substrates such as granodiorite, gneiss, shale, and schist.
