Name: Bromus rubens - Erodium cicutarium - Chaenactis spp. Ruderal Desert Grassland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found on post-burn alluvial terraces and valleys of Death Valley National Park in California and Nevada. It is found in mid to upper elevations (ranging from approximately 900-1350 m and averaging 1077 m). Slopes are gentle to somewhat steep (1-18°). It is found primarily on midslope positions at easterly to southerly aspects. Soils include clay loam to loamy sand and are derived from a variety of substrates such as alluvium and rhyolite. Vegetation forms an open to intermittent herb layer in which the herbaceous cover ranges from 3 to 53%. The tree layer is typically absent, and the shrub layer is sparse and ranges from 0.3 to 2% cover. Bromus rubens, Erodium cicutarium, and Chaenactis spp. are characteristically present and often codominant in the herbaceous layer. Other commonly associated herbs include Amsinckia spp., Cryptantha spp., Dalea spp., Eriogonum spp., Eschscholzia spp., Mentzelia spp., Phacelia fremontii, Salvia columbariae, and Sphaeralcea ambigua. Shrubs that are often or sometimes present include Ambrosia dumosa, Gutierrezia spp., Hymenoclea salsola, Larrea tridentata, and Stephanomeria pauciflora.
