Name: Ephedra viridis - Purshia glandulosa Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found at upper elevations scattered across the northern Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin, including in Death Valley National Park, in California and Nevada. Elevation ranges from approximately 1450 to 2150 m, and averages 1751 m. Slopes are typically somewhat steep to steep, though they range from gentle to steep (2-31°). The association is found primarily on mid to high slopes up to ridges with variable aspects that may have colluvial, post-fire, and/or intermittent wash disturbance. Soils are usually mixtures of sand and loam and are typically derived from igneous substrates such as granodiorite or rhyolite. Vegetation forms an open to intermittent shrub canopy in which the shrub cover ranges from 5 to 35%. The emergent tree layer is sparse and ranges from 0 to 2% cover, and the herb understory is variable and ranges from 0 to 22% cover. Ephedra viridis and Purshia glandulosa are the dominant and/or codominant shrubs. Other shrubs often present include Ericameria nauseosa, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana, and Grayia spinosa. Commonly associated herbs include Bromus tectorum, Achnatherum speciosum, and Mentzelia spp., and those trees sometimes present include Pinus monophylla and Yucca brevifolia. Nonvascular plants sometimes include lichens and mosses. Stands of this association are often found adjacent to Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana stands.
