Name: Ephedra viridis Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is found at upper elevations in the Mojave Desert in California, Nevada and Arizona. It is characterized by a sparse to open shrub canopy (3-15% cover) that is dominated by Ephedra viridis with Gutierrezia sarothrae often present. Other shrubs sometimes present include Ericameria teretifolia, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Salazaria mexicana, and Tetradymia stenolepis. Herbaceous cover is variable but typically sparse (<10%) with common associates Achnatherum speciosum, Ambrosia acanthicarpa, Datura wrightii, Poa secunda, Stephanomeria exigua, and invasive exotics Bromus rubens and Salsola tragus. Scattered Yucca brevifolia may be present with <0.5% cover. Biological soil crusts are common. Stands occur in rocky hills, ridges and bedrock slopes and cliffs at low to upper elevations (180-2150 m). Sites are primarily on low to mid slopes to ridges often with cool, northerly aspects with moderate to steep (11-38°) slopes. Soils are shallow and rocky clay loams that are derived from both igneous and sedimentary parent materials such as granodiorite, rhyolite, claystone, limestone, or shale.
