Name: Ficus carica Ruderal Riparian Scrub
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It has been found uncommonly in Death Valley National Park in California, at mid to upper elevations of the Panamint Mountains. It was mapped at two mountain springs (Mint Spring and Warm Spring), and patches are small in size (<0.1 hectare). Elevation ranges from approximately 700 to 1400 m, and averages 1133 m. Stands are found at/near springs where they appear to be an artifact of cultural plantings, and shrubs are slowly naturalizing. Soils are derived from a variety of substrates such as granodiorite and sandstone. Other culturally planted stands in the area where this type was mapped include Fraxinus velutina, Nerium oleander, and Tamarix aphylla. Vegetation forms an intermittent to continuous shrub canopy in which the shrub cover ranges from 60 to 100%. The emergent tree layer is sparse, if present, and the herb understory is variable. Ficus carica is the dominant and characteristic shrub. Nerium oleander is sometimes present as an associated non-native, and other shrubs may include Ambrosia dumosa, Atriplex canescens, Ericameria cuneata, and Larrea tridentata.
