Description: This marsh and playa association is found in the Colorado Desert, Mojave Desert and southeastern Great Basin in southern California and southern Nevada and is characterized by an intermittent to continuous herbaceous layer (50-86% cover) dominated or codominated by Juncus cooperi. Commonly associated herbs include Distichlis spicata and Typha spp. Other herbs sometimes present include Anemopsis californica, Helianthus annuus, Heliotropium curassavicum, Iva acerosa, Juncus arcticus ssp. littoralis, Juncus mexicanus, Nicolletia occidentalis, Phragmites australis, and Schoenoplectus americanus. Occasional shrubs may be present (<2% cover), including Atriplex hymenelytra, Isocoma acradenia, Pluchea sericea, Suaeda moquinii, and sometimes introduced exotics of Tamarix sp. . Stands occur at low-elevation spring-fed marshes in low-lying valleys and playa edges. Elevation ranges from approximately -75 to 950 m. Sites are flat to gently sloping and intermittently saturated with a shallow water table. Soils are often silty clays that are poorly drained, intermittently saturated and alkaline or saline and derived from alluvium, including from sandstone and felsic volcanic rock.
