Name: Juniperus californica / Coleogyne ramosissima Mojave Scrub
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This wooded scrub association is commonly found in the Mojave Desert of California and extends north into Nevada and south and east into the Sonoran Desert in southern California and Arizona where it is uncommon. It also occurs on the eastern edge of the southern California Mountains and Valleys, such as in the Little San Bernardino Mountains. It is characterized by an open small-tree/tall-shrub canopy (3-11% cover) dominated by Juniperus californica with an open short-shrub layer (6-48% cover) dominated or codominated by Coleogyne ramosissima. Other characteristic species may include Pinus monophylla or Yucca brevifolia present at low cover (usually <1%) in the upper canopy and diverse shrubs. Characteristic shrubs include Echinocereus engelmannii, Ephedra nevadensis, Eriogonum fasciculatum, and Yucca schidigera. Herbaceous cover is typically sparse (2-6% cover), but variable (0-64%) and diverse. Commonly associated herbs include Achnatherum speciosum, Amsinckia tessellata, Chorizanthe brevicornu, Erodium cicutarium, Mirabilis laevis var. villosa, Pectocarya spp., Pleuraphis rigida, Salvia columbariae, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and invasive exotics Bromus rubens, Bromus madritensis, and Bromus tectorum. Biological soil crusts are common. Stands are most frequently found at mid to upper elevations (1000-1600 m) in upper portions of bajadas near the base of mountains and extend up rocky mountain slopes. Sites are primarily on mid-slope to summit positions, on gentle to steep (1-28°) slopes. Soils are frequently coarse-textured and derived primarily from granite/alkali-granite and alluvium, but range from sand through moderately fine, silty, clay loam derived from a variety of parent materials. The soil surface often has abundant cobble and gravel cover.
