Name: Juniperus californica / Nolina bigelovii Mojave Scrub Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found only rarely within the Newberry Mountains in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada, and adjacent lands, which are moderate to somewhat steep, rocky and gravelly, mid-elevation mountain sites. The association is found primarily on mid- to top-slopes with north to westerly aspects. Elevation ranges from approximately 894 to 1191 m, and averages 1064 m. Slopes range from moderate to somewhat steep (10-20°). Soils include sand to sandy loam, and are derived from granite/alkali-granite substrates. Vegetation forms an open tree canopy in which tree cover ranges from 1 to 3%. The shrub layer is variable and ranges from 18 to 20% cover, and the herb understory is also variable and ranges from 4 to 13% cover. <i>Juniperus californica</i> is the dominant and/or characteristic tree in the overstory. The understory shrub layer usually has dominance or codominance by <i>Nolina bigelovii</i>. Other commonly associated shrubs include <i>Acacia greggii, Coleogyne ramosissima, Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa, Ephedra nevadensis, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Ferocactus cylindraceus, Echinocereus engelmannii, Galium stellatum, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Krameria erecta, Lotus rigidus, Viguiera parishii</i>, and <i>Yucca schidigera</i>, and commonly associated herbs include <i>Porophyllum gracile, Achnatherum speciosum</i>, and <i>Pleuraphis rigida</i>.  Accession Code: urn:lsid:vegbank.org:commConcept:37481-{095FD431-83BE-4B8F-A1EA-D1582BFBD77E} Plot-observations of this Community Concept: 0
