Name: Juniperus osteosperma - Yucca brevifolia / Bouteloua eriopoda Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This woodland association occurs at upper elevations of desert ranges and mountains in the eastern Mojave Desert of California. The open tree canopy is dominated by Juniperus osteosperma with Yucca brevifolia characteristically present, and the understory is characterized by a dominance or codominance of Bouteloua eriopoda. Other commonly associated species include Achnatherum hymenoides, Achnatherum speciosum, Aristida purpurea, Pleuraphis jamesii, Pleuraphis rigida, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and exotic species Bromus rubens and Erodium cicutarium. The shrub layer is variable, though Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa, Ephedra nevadensis, Salazaria mexicana, and Yucca baccata are characteristically present. The dwarf-shrubs Gutierrezia microcephala or Gutierrezia sarothrae are also often present. Stands are typically found along low hills with alternating drainages. Sites often occur on low to high slopes between 1450 and 1675 m elevation with variable aspect. Slopes range from flat to moderate (2-8°). Substrates are typically alluvium, often derived from granite, with soil textures that tend to gravelly and sandy loam.
