Name: Keckiella antirrhinoides - Prunus fasciculata Desert Wash Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is rare, found primarily on granitic bedrock slopes such as in the Granite Mountains in the Mojave National Preserve and along wind-flagged Wilson Ridge in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, in Arizona. It was sampled at mid to upper elevations, ranging from approximately 1000 to 1400 m, with an elevation average of 1192 m. It occurs on low to high slopes, that are steep (from 28-31°), and on northerly and easterly aspects. Soils are loamy sand or sandy loam, which are derived from granitic substrate. Vegetation forms an open to intermittent shrub canopy in which the shrub cover ranges from 12 to 22%. The emergent tree layer is sparse, if present, and the herb understory is variable and ranges from 1 to 14% cover. Keckiella antirrhinoides is dominant or codominant in the shrub overstory, and Prunus fasciculata along with Acacia greggii, Ephedra nevadensis, Ericameria linearifolia, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Salvia mohavensis, Stephanomeria pauciflora, and Yucca schidigera are characteristic in this layer at lower cover. Other shrubs often present include Echinocereus engelmannii, Ephedra nevadensis, Ephedra viridis, Galium stellatum, and Thamnosma montana. Commonly associated herbs include Achnatherum speciosum, Bromus rubens, Cryptantha spp., and Erodium cicutarium, and nonvascular plants include lichens and mosses.
