Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is found across the Mojave Desert and southeastern Great Basin, and is found in the Chocolate Mountains and Valleys of the Sonoran Desert in California, with an open to intermittent shrub canopy codominated by Larrea tridentata and Ambrosia dumosa with Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa and/or Cylindropuntia ramosissima characteristically present and often codominant. Other shrubs often present include Cylindropuntia echinocarpa, Echinocereus engelmannii, Krameria erecta, Salazaria mexicana, and Thamnosma montana. Herbaceous cover is usually sparse to open with associates Pleuraphis rigida and Xylorhiza tortifolia. Stands occur along gravelly to cobbly upper bajadas near bouldery mountain slopes that transition to mid-elevation mixed scrub associations with Eriogonum fasciculatum and Yucca schidigera. It occurs at low to mid elevations ranging from approximately 240 to 1100 m, with an average of 735 m on variable aspects on slopes ranging from gentle to somewhat steep (1-17°). Sites may endure grazing from livestock, where the spiny cacti often increase in cover at the expense of other shrubs.
