Other shrubs often present include Acacia greggii, Ambrosia dumosa, Hymenoclea salsola, and Opuntia basilaris. Herbaceous cover is variable and ranges from 0 to 5% cover. Common species include Eriogonum inflatum, Plantago ovata, Sphaeralcea ambigua, Stephanomeria pauciflora, and introduced exotic species Bromus rubens and Schismus spp. Nonvascular species form biological soil crusts. Stands occur primarily in canyons, washes, and drainage channels at low to mid elevations (150-800 m). Soils include sands and are derived from a variety of substrates such as alkali-granite (alaskite), alluvium, sandstone, and schist.
