Name: Larrea tridentata Sparse Post-burn / Herbaceous Desert Scrub
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is uncommon in Death Valley National Park in California and Nevada and was sampled at mid to upper elevations in the Black Mountains, Greenwater Valley, and the Nevada Triangle. Elevation ranges from approximately 850 to 1300 m with an elevation average of 1140 m. This association inhabits post-burn and disturbed areas, and there is often debris from dead Larrea tridentata present in the stand. It is found primarily on toeslopes and lower slopes that range from gentle to somewhat steep (1-24°) and are variable in aspect. Soils are derived from a variety of substrates such as alluvium and rhyolite. Vegetation forms an open shrub canopy in which the shrub cover ranges from 1 to 8% and averages 3%. An emergent tree layer is absent, and the herb understory is variable and ranges from 0 to 16% cover. Larrea tridentata is the characteristic and dominant shrub at low cover, and Ambrosia dumosa, Ephedra spp., and Lycium andersonii are often present at trace cover. Commonly associated herbs include Amsinckia tessellata, Antheropeas spp., Chaenactis spp., Bromus rubens, Bromus tectorum, Eriogonum nidularium, Oxytheca perfoliata, and Salvia columbariae.
