Name: Panicum urvilleanum Dune
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This uncommon sparse to open herbaceous dune association is found scattered across the central Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert in California and may extend to similar habitats in southern Nevada, southwestern Arizona, and Sonora, Mexico. Vegetation is characterized by a sparse to open herbaceous layer with typically <10% total cover that is dominated or codominated by the rhizomatous, perennial grass Panicum urvilleanum. Other characteristic herbs include Achnatherum hymenoides, Croton californicus, Cryptantha spp., Dicoria canescens, Oenothera deltoides, Helianthus annuus, and exotic Schismus spp. Scattered associated emergent shrubs Petalonyx thurberi and Penstemon thurberi may be present as well as occasional emergent Chilopsis linearis trees, both with sparse cover (<3% cover). Stands are found commonly along partially stabilized and deeper shifting dunes and sand fields at low to mid elevation ranging from -10 to 850 m. Sites are on gentle to moderately steep (5-23°) low and mid slopes at various aspects. Soils are medium- to fine-textured sand derived primarily from eolian deposits with minor amounts of alluvium, especially near drainages.
