Name: Petalonyx thurberi Dune
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found along sand dunes within Death Valley National Park, such as Ibex Dunes, Panamint Dunes and Saline Valley Sand Dunes, and within Mojave National Preserve such as at Kelso Dunes, in California. It has been sampled and observed at low to upper elevations, ranging from approximately 350 to 1300 m, and averaging 788 m. Slopes are gentle to somewhat steep (1-20°). It is found primarily on lowslope positions at neutral to southerly aspects. Soils are typically sand and derived from eolian dune sand, though alluvial sediments may also be present. Vegetation forms a sparse herb layer in which the herbaceous cover ranges from 0 to 4%. The tree layer is usually absent, and the shrub layer is sparse to open and ranges from 1 to 20% cover, though shrub cover averages 6% cover. Petalonyx thurberi is dominant in the shrub layer. Commonly associated herbs include Dicoria canescens. Shrubs sometimes present include Larrea tridentata.
