Name: Pinus monophylla / Eriogonum fasciculatum Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This woodland association is found commonly in Mojave National Preserve in southern California; it is also likely to occur in the southern Sierra Nevada. The open tree canopy (2-31% tree cover) is dominated or sometimes codominated by Pinus monophylla with other trees sometimes present, including Juniperus californica or Juniperus osteosperma. The shrub understory ranges from 10 to 30% cover and is characterized by a dominance or codominance of Eriogonum fasciculatum with other shrubs such as Ericameria laricifolia, Yucca baccata, Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa, Echinocereus mojavensis, Ephedra viridis, Ericameria linearifolia, and Thamnosma montana. Herbaceous cover is typically low and variable (3-15%) with associated species Achnatherum speciosum, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and exotic annual grass Bromus rubens. Nonvascular plants include lichens. Stands occur on gentle to steep slopes (3-31°) on all positions and aspects to summits of hills and mountains in desert ranges. Elevation ranges from approximately 1320 to 1850 m. Soils are variable, ranging from loamy sand to clay loam and silty clay. Parent materials are derived usually from igneous substrates such as granodiorite and rhyolite, and rarely from quartzite/sandstone.
