Name: Pluchea sericea / Phragmites australis Wet Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is found in Arizona and Nevada, and in the Colorado/Sonoran Desert in California. The vegetation is characterized by an open/intermittent to moderately dense shrub canopy (16-65% cover) dominated by Pluchea sericea with a variable herbaceous layer (7-94% cover) that is strongly dominated by Phragmites australis. Tamarix ramosissima can be found invading stands, and Allenrolfea occidentalis is sometimes present with low cover. Herbaceous species sometimes present include Anemopsis californica and Distichlis spicata. Stands occur along typically spring-fed, alkali/saline washes and riparian areas at low elevation ranging from approximately 400 to 500 m. Sites are on variable slope positions and variable aspects, with slopes ranging from gentle to steep (2-28°). Soils are typically alluvium that can include gypsum and other alkaline sediments, and they are derived from a variety of substrates such as granodiorite, dolostone, and limestone.
