Name: Prosopis pubescens / Pluchea sericea Alkaline Spring Wet Scrub
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This wet scrub association is found in the Colorado Desert and Mojave Desert of California and Nevada and is characterized by an open to intermittent tree canopy (2-40% cover) dominated by Prosopis pubescens with a variably mixed shrub layer (15-94% cover). Pluchea sericea is characteristically present to dominant with other wetland shrubs, including Allenrolfea occidentalis, Baccharis emoryi, Suaeda moquinii, and Vitis arizonica. The herbaceous layer is variable, ranging from absent to dense (0-84% cover) and includes Distichlis spicata and Phragmites australis as commonly associated herbs. Stands occur at low to mid elevations (300-750 m) on gentle to moderate slopes (1-7°). Sites include spring-fed sites, including bottomlands adjacent to mudhills and badlands, terraced slopes, and stream edges where soil moisture is perennially available. Soils include clay, clay loam, and silty clay, and are alkaline alluvium often derived from limestone and sandstone, in which alkaline/saline crusts are often visible.
