Name: Psorothamnus fremontii / Cryptogamic Crust (Gypsum) Sparse Vegetation Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: This uncommon association occurs on gypsum-derived soils in the Mojave Desert in Arizona and Nevada. Total vegetation cover is typically sparse (&lt;10% cover) with shrub cover &lt;8% and herbaceous cover &lt;5%. Shrub cover is characteristically dominated or codominated by <i>Psorothamnus fremontii</i> and is usually sparse in cover. Other shrubs often present include <i>Acacia greggii, Ambrosia dumosa, Atriplex confertifolia, Ephedra torreyana, Larrea tridentata</i>, and <i>Lepidium fremontii</i>. Herbaceous cover is characterized by the presence of <i>Phacelia pulchella</i> with rare gypsophilous species such as <i>Anulocaulis leiosolenus, Arctomecon californica, Camissonia multijuga</i>, and <i>Enceliopsis argophylla</i>. Additional common species include <i>Eriogonum inflatum, Sphaeralcea ambigua, Stephanomeria pauciflora</i>, and exotic <i>Schismus</i> spp. Scattered emergent <i>Prosopis glandulosa</i> trees and <i>Suaeda moquinii</i> shrubs (&lt;2% cover) may occur on the edge of stands of this association. Cryptogamic crust is characteristically present with variable cover (0.2-70%) and is often higher in cover than the vascular plants in this association. Stands are often small and occur on upland landforms of undulating alluvial fans, hillocks, hillslopes, and related gypsum-sand areas at mid to upper elevations (400-900 m). Sites are flat to steep (0-45°) and occur at various aspects.
