Name: Psorothamnus spinosus / Acacia greggii - (Hyptis emoryi) Desert Wash Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently only described from Joshua Tree National Park, California. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. Stands form a sparse to open shrubland with 0-6% cover in the tree/tall stratum, 4-14% cover in the shrub/mid stratum, and 5% cover in the herb/low stratum. Total vegetation cover ranges from 5-15%. Characteristic species of this association are Psorothamnus spinosus in the tree layer and Acacia greggii, Hymenoclea salsola, and Larrea tridentata in the shrub layer. Hyptis emoryi along with Acacia greggii and Hymenoclea salsola exhibit the highest cover of shrubs. Cryptobioic crusts and Chamaesyce spp. are often present. Stands are found at low to mid elevations (400-1000 m [1200-3200 feet]) on primarily northeasterly slope aspects in sandy and gravelly, active washes. Slopes are gentle (2°) with flat, undulating, or hummocky and swaley topographies. Soils range from sands to loams derived from granitic parent materials. Ground cover consists of 0-3% bedrock, 0% boulder, 0% stone, 0-25% cobble, 3-63% gravel, and 25-85% fines. Litter ranges from 0-5% cover. These sites generally experience low levels of disturbance from competition from exotics and moderate levels of disturbance from vandalism/dumping/litter.
