Name: Psorothamnus spinosus / Hymenoclea salsola - (Bebbia juncea, Ephedra californica) Desert Wash Scrub
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This desert wash scrub association is found in the Mojave Desert and northern and eastern Colorado Desert in California and Nevada. It forms an open to intermittent microphyllous tall-shrub or tree canopy that ranges from 2 to 10% cover dominated by Psorothamnus spinosus sometimes with scattered Chilopsis linearis. There is also a sparse to open short-shrub layer (1-13% cover) dominated or codominated by Hymenoclea salsola and other wash-associated shrubs such as Acacia greggii, Bebbia juncea, and Ephedra californica. Herbaceous cover is typically sparse (<10% cover) and incudes associated species Brandegea bigelovii, Chamaesyce spp., Cryptantha spp., Cucurbita palmata, Datura wrightii, Lepidium fremontii, Stephanomeria pauciflora, and exotics Erodium cicutarium and Schismus spp. Biological soil crusts are often present but not abundant. Stands primarily occur on gently sloping (1-7°), active sandy washes/channel beds at low to mid elevations (200-1000 m). Sites have low- to mid-slope topographic positions in broad valleys, basins and alluvial fans. Soils are alluvial sand deposits or loamy sand with variable amounts of gravel (2-87%) depending on the parent material. Some stands are on granite with some volcanic rock fragments, gravel and sand sediments prevailing. These sites generally experience low levels of disturbance from competition from exotics and moderate levels of disturbance from road/trail construction/maintenance.
