Name: Purshia glandulosa - Artemisia tridentata Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is found in desert ranges and mountains in the northern Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin in California and Nevada. It forms an open to intermittent shrub canopy (21-50% cover) that is dominated by Artemisia tridentata and Purshia glandulosa with Ephedra viridis characteristically present. Other shrubs often present include Ericameria nauseosa and Prunus andersonii. The herbaceous layer is variable and ranges from 5 to 20% cover. Commonly associated species include Achnatherum hymenoides, Camissonia pterosperma, Chorizanthe brevicornu, Elymus elymoides, Eriastrum spp., Layia glandulosa, Mentzelia albicaulis, Phacelia vallis-mortae, Stephanomeria exigua, and exotic Bromus tectorum. Scattered emergent Yucca brevifolia and occasional Pinus monophylla may be present with <2% cover. Stands occur in high valleys to upper slopes and ridges at upper elevations (1500-2000 m). Sites are gentle to moderate alluvial slopes (2-14°) on variable aspects. Soils vary from gravelly to finer soils that are typically coarse-textured loamy sands or sandy loams and are derived from andesite and granodiorite.
