Name: Purshia glandulosa Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is found in desert ranges in the central Mojave Desert to the southern Great Basin in California and Nevada. It is also found along the southeastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, and likely along the northern slopes of the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains. It forms an open shrub canopy (5-30% cover) that is dominated by Purshia glandulosa with other characteristic shrubs such as Ephedra nevadensis present to codominant. Other shrubs often present include Artemisia tridentata, Prunus fasciculata, Salvia dorrii, and Yucca baccata. The herbaceous layer is variable and ranges from 2 to 16% cover. Commonly associated herbs include Achnatherum hymenoides, Amsinckia spp., and exotic Bromus rubens. Scattered emergent Yucca brevifolia and occasional Juniperus osteosperma trees may be present with <2% cover. Stands occur on higher-elevation rocky slopes to high valleys adjacent to hills and mountains at 1500 to 1800 m elevation. Some stands have been impacted by fire, though Purshia glandulosa is able to resprout after fire. Sites are often midslopes with gentle to somewhat steep (1-20°) slopes on variable aspects. Substrates are alluvial soils ranging from loamy sand to sandy clay alluvium mixed with rocks derived typically from igneous parent material such as granodiorite and pyroclastic tuff.
