Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is found uncommonly along desert ridges and mountains in the Mojave Desert in California and forms an open shrub canopy (9-17% cover) that is dominated by Agave utahensis and Purshia stansburiana with Echinocereus engelmannii, Ephedra viridis, Gutierrezia sarothrae, and Thamnosma montana being characteristically present. Several other shrubs may be present. The herbaceous layer is variable and ranges from 2 to 22% cover. Commonly associated herbs include Achnatherum speciosum, Aristida purpurea, Astrolepis cochisensis, Muhlenbergia porteri, Sphaeralcea ambigua, Thymophylla pentachaeta var. belenidium, and invasive exotics Bromus rubens and Erodium cicutarium. Occasional emergent trees may be present with <2% cover. Biological soil crusts are common. Stands are found along upper-elevation limestone and dolomite bedrock slopes and ridges in the Mojave Desert. Sites are on moderate to steep (9-33°) slopes on predominantly warm, southerly to westerly aspects at 1400 to 1650 m elevation. Soils are usually clay loam or sandy loam and are derived from nutrient-poor parent materials.
