Name: Quercus chrysolepis / Rhamnus ilicifolia Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This woodland occurs in the mountain ranges between the Transverse Ranges and western Mojave Desert and extends into the central Mojave Desert in moist desert canyons in southern California. Similar stands occur in the southern Sierra Nevada. This woodland association forms an open to continuous tree canopy ranging from 8-80% cover that is dominated or codominated by Quercus chrysolepis with Pinus monophylla sometimes present. The shrub layer is open to moderately dense (5-40% cover) and often patchy. Characteristic species Rhamnus ilicifolia is typically present in the understory shrub layer, along with Artemisia ludoviciana and Rhus trilobata. Other commonly associated shrubs include Brickellia californica, Ericameria linearifolia, Garrya flavescens, and Yucca baccata. The herbaceous understory is sparse to open and ranges from 1 to 12% cover. Various herbs occur in the stands, including Achnatherum speciosum, Arabis spp., Elymus elymoides, Bromus rubens, and Bromus tectorum. Indicator species are Lomatium parryi, Erigeron utahensis, Leymus salinus, Cheilanthes feei, Frangula californica ssp. tomentella, Arabis perennans, Agave deserti, Linanthus pungens, and Maurandella antirrhiniflora. Stands occur from mid to upper elevations along protected rock outcrops, canyons, and spring-fed mountain drainages. Elevations range from approximately 1400 to 1800 m. Sites range from lowslopes to summits. Slopes range from gentle to steep (5-35°), and aspects range from north to south. Soils are derived primarily from granite, granodiorite, limestone, and sandstone substrates, and textures are variable from clay loam to coarse sand.
