Name: Quercus turbinella - Juniperus californica - Eriogonum spp. Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is known from the Newberry Mountains in Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada. It is characterized by an open to intermittent shrub canopy in which the shrub cover ranges from 10 to 60%. A sparse emergent tree layer is present that ranges to 15% cover. Quercus turbinella is the dominant or codominant shrub and Eriogonum fasciculatum, Eriogonum wrightii, and Gutierrezia sarothrae are characteristic. The characteristic tree is Juniperus californica at similar or lower cover than the Quercus turbinella. Scattered Pinus monophylla trees are sometimes present with sparse cover. Other shrubs are often present, including Ephedra nevadensis, Ericameria linearifolia, Ferocactus cylindraceus, Keckiella antirrhinoides, Lotus rigidus, and Yucca schidigera. Herbaceous species cover is variable and ranges from 0 to 10% with associated species Achnatherum speciosum and Sphaeralcea ambigua. Stands occur on gentle to steep (from 2-40°), rocky slopes and ridgetops with variable aspects between 950 and 1700 m elevation. Granite outcrops and/or other exposed bedrock is common. Soils are often shallow and gravelly and primarily derived from alkali-granite (alaskite).
