Name: Salix exigua - Baccharis sergiloides Warm Desert Wet Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This riparian shrubland association is found at lower to upper elevations in the Mojave Desert in California and is characterized by an open to dense shrub canopy (17-94% cover) dominated by Salix exigua with Baccharis sergiloides present to codominant. Many other wash and upland shrubs may be present such as Acacia greggii, Brickellia californica, Ephedra viridis, Ericameria linearifolia, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Gutierrezia microcephala, Lotus rigidus, Prunus fasciculata, Rhus trilobata, Stephanomeria pauciflora, Viguiera parishii, Yucca schidigera and exotic Tamarix ramosissima. Herbaceous cover is generally low (1-10% cover) and composed of a variety of generally mesic to wet species. Scattered emergent Prosopis glandulosa or Pinus monophylla trees may be present (to 7% cover). Nonvascular plants include mosses. Stands are found from approximately 500 to 1500 m elevation, typically in spring-fed mountain drainages and canyon bottoms. Sites have gentle to moderate slopes (2-14°). Running water was present in most of the sites during spring and summer sampling. Soils are primarily sand and are derived from a variety of substrates such as alluvium, granodiorite, and limestone.
