Name: Salvia funerea Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This uncommon association is found in the northern and central Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin in California where it is characterized by an open shrub canopy (0.5-13% cover) dominated or codominated by Salvia funerea with other shrubs often present, such as Echinocactus polycephalus and Viguiera reticulata. Other shrubs may be present at low cover, including Amphipappus fremontii, Atriplex confertifolia, Eucnide urens, Larrea tridentata, Pleurocoronis pluriseta, and Stephanomeria pauciflora. Herbaceous cover is sparse and ranges from 0 to 5% cover. Commonly associated herbs include Cheilanthes parryi and Eriogonum inflatum. Cryptogamic crusts are common. Stands occur on steep rocky slopes in the low to mid elevations (650-1170 m) of desert ranges. Sites are primarily steep to very steep slopes (29-53°) to ridgelines on variable slope positions and on variable aspects. Soils include loams and clay and are calcareous, derived primarily from limestone and dolostone.
