Name: Suaeda moquinii - Atriplex canescens Alkaline Wet Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This desert wetland association is found in southern California in the Mojave, Colorado and Sonoran deserts and extends north into the southern Great Basin. The vegetation is characterized by an open shrub canopy (4-15% cover) composed of Suaeda moquinii and Atriplex canescens. Herbaceous cover is variable and ranges from 0 to 9% with Wislizenia refracta and invasive Schismus spp. sometimes present. If Allenrolfea occidentalis, Larrea tridentata, or Prosopis glandulosa is present, then cover is usually low (<1%). Stands occur at low to mid elevations primarily in wetland basins, dune fields, and playa edges that have high water tables and high alkali/salinity. Sites are typically flat to gently sloping (to 6°). Elevation ranges from approximately 0 to 950 m. Soils are derived from alluvium and eolian dune sand, and typically alkaline/saline often with salt crusts.
