Name: Vitis girdiana Wet Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This riparian shrubland association is found at mid to upper elevations in the Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin of California, and is scattered in other areas of southern California including the southern Sierra Nevada and southern California Mountains and Valleys. It is characterized by a dense shrub canopy (67-99% cover) that is dominated or codominated by a thick mat of the woody vine Vitis girdiana. Other shrubs present may include Atriplex canescens, Baccharis sergiloides, Clematis ligusticifolia, Ericameria nauseosa, Pluchea sericea, and Salix spp. Herbaceous cover is sparse (1-7% cover) often with scattered wetland species such as Eleocharis rostellata, Phragmites australis, Stanleya pinnata, Schoenoplectus americanus, and exotic annuals Bromus rubens and Bromus tectorum. Stands occur in riparian canyon drainages, especially those that are spring-fed, at approximately 650-1650 m elevation. Soils are derived from a variety of substrates such as alluvium, granodiorite, rhyolite, and sandstone.
