Name: Washingtonia filifera Ruderal Spring Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This ruderal spring palm association is found in scattered locations in the Mojave Desert. Stands are characterized by an open to continuous tree canopy (3-95% cover) that is dominated or codominated by Washingtonia filifera, which has invaded from cultural plantings. Other trees may be present to codominant, such as Prosopis spp. and the exotic Phoenix dactylifera, as many sites are planted. The native shrub Pluchea sericea is sometimes present in the sparse to intermittent shrub understory. Scattered herbaceous species may be present with sparse to open cover. Stands are found primarily along low-elevation stream bottoms and lowslope springs where water is perennially available. Elevation ranges from approximately 0 to 500 m, and averages 251 m. Aspects are variable, and soils are often clay-derived from a variety of substrates including alluvium, limestone, and sandstone.
