Name: Yucca brevifolia / (Artemisia tridentata, Atriplex confertifolia) Wooded Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This wooded association is found at upper elevations in the southern Great Basin in California. It forms an open tree canopy (1-8% cover) dominated by Yucca brevifolia with an open short-shrub layer (5-24% cover) typically dominated or codominated by Artemisia tridentata and/or Atriplex confertifolia. Other commonly associated shrubs include Ephedra nevadensis, Krascheninnikovia lanata, Lycium andersonii, Menodora spinescens, and Picrothamnus desertorum. Herbaceous cover is variable and ranges from 0.1 to 13% cover. Commonly associated herbs include Achnatherum hymenoides, Astragalus spp., Erigeron aphanactis, Eriogonum inflatum, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and invasive exotic annual grass Bromus rubens. Stands occur primarily on rocky mountain slopes above bajadas, valleys, and drainage channels that drain off the slopes, or along draws between ridges of mountains. Sites vary from gentle to steep (3-28°) slopes at 1410 to 2150 m elevation. Soils range from sandy clay to sandy loams and are derived from a variety of substrates such as alluvium, granodiorite, sandstone, and shale.
