Name: Pleuraphis rigida Dune Grassland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is commonly found in sandy areas in the Mojave and Colorado/Sonoran deserts in California and in Arizona. It forms an open to intermittent graminoid layer (2-31% cover) dominated by Pleuraphis rigida with exotic Schismus spp. present to codominant in disturbed areas. Other commonly associated herbs include Oenothera deltoides and Stephanomeria exigua. Scattered shrubs (to 6% cover) may be present, including Ambrosia dumosa, Krameria grayi, Psorothamnus emoryi, and Larrea tridentata. Stands occur on sand dunes, flats, and ramps and in sandy areas near lake edges at low to upper elevations of 250 to 1450 m. Sites are gentle to moderate (1-9°) slopes on all slope positions and predominantly southerly aspects. Soil is typically medium to fine sand, though sometimes with a loam component, and derived primarily from eolian dune sands or other sedimentary substrates such as alluvium or sometimes sandstone.
