Name: Phoenix dactylifera Ruderal Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This ruderal association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It occurs in localized patches along low-elevation alkali springs in Death Valley National Park, California, such as in the Black Mountains and Funeral Mountains area at Ratatat and Travertine East springs. Elevation ranges from approximately 100 to 250 m, and averages 154 m. Stands have included cultural plantings with Phoenix dactylifera escaping into natural settings as scattered trees and as small stands in Death Valley National Park. Sites with Phoenix dactylifera along with Washingtonia filifera were also mapped as "Palm" points in the Travertine Springs complex (Thomas 2006); these exotic palm species dominated the riparian vegetation at these springs until early 2011 when the palms were mechanically removed following an autumn 2010 fire (Sada and Cooper 2012). Vegetation forms an intermittent to continuous tree canopy ranging from 49 to 95% cover. Phoenix dactylifera is dominant in the tree overstory, and Prosopis spp. and/or Washingtonia filifera are sometimes present. Understory shrub and herb cover/composition information was not documented in the areas sampled.
