Name: Prosopis glandulosa - (Salix exigua, Salix lasiolepis) Wet Scrub
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This uncommon wet scrub association is found in spring-fed riparian areas in the Mojave Desert in Arizona, California and Nevada, and in the Colorado Desert and adjacent eastern edge of the Southern California Mountains and Valleys, in California. Vegetation is characterized by an open to intermittent scrub canopy (5-50% cover) of Prosopis glandulosa that is codominated by a tall-shrub layer (18-50% cover) composed of Salix exigua, Salix lasiolepis, or other Salix species. Chilopsis linearis may be present with low cover (not codominant). Other commonly associated shrubs include Acacia greggii, Baccharis sergiloides, Ephedra nevadensis, and Phoradendron californicum. Herbaceous cover is variable, ranging from 4-20% with a mix of species such as Aristida purpurea, and species of Amsinckia, Carex, Eleocharis, Typha, and Vulpia. Exotics species commonly present include Bromus rubens, Cynodon dactylon, and Polypogon monspeliensis. Stands occur in seasonally flooded riparian drainages typically within spring-fed canyons at low to mid elevations. Sites are on gentle to somewhat steep (2-25°) slopes with variable aspects at 580 to 1240 m elevation. Soils include clay loam and loamy sand and are derived from conglomerate, granite, and granodiorite.
