Name: Yucca brevifolia / (Yucca baccata) / Pleuraphis jamesii - Bouteloua eriopoda Wooded Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is commonly found at mid to upper elevations in the eastern and northern Mojave Desert in California and Nevada. It forms an open small-tree/tall-shrub canopy (1-6% cover) that is characterized by Yucca brevifolia, sometimes with Juniperus osteosperma present with an open short-shrub layer (<3% cover) and a grassy understory dominated or codominated by diagnostic grasses Pleuraphis jamesii and/or Bouteloua eriopoda. Yucca baccata is often present in the short-shrub layer along with low cover of Ephedra nevadensis and Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa. This layer may be diverse in composition and include other associated shrubs such as Eriogonum fasciculatum, Echinocereus engelmannii, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Krameria erecta, Psilostrophe cooperi, and Salazaria mexicana. The open to moderately dense herbaceous layer (7-36% cover) is typically diverse though Pleuraphis jamesii and/or Bouteloua eriopoda are often dominant or codominant; other associated species include Achnatherum speciosum, Eriogonum inflatum, Muhlenbergia porteri, Sphaeralcea ambigua, and invasive exotic annuals Bromus rubens and Erodium cicutarium. Stands occur from upper bajadas near mountain slopes, volcanic domes, rolling hillslopes, to elevated mesatops and upper slopes and ridges from 810 to 1820 m elevation. Sites vary from gentle to somewhat steep (1-21°) slopes on all aspects. Soils typically range between sand and loam and are derived from a variety of substrates such as alluvium, gneiss, granodiorite, rhyolite, and sand.
