Name: Gutierrezia (microcephala, sarothrae) Dwarf-shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This dwarf-shrubland association is known from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Grand Canyon National Park and is likely widespread throughout the interior western U.S. The sparse to open dwarf-shrub canopy is characterized and dominated by Gutierrezia sarothrae and/or Gutierrezia microcephala. Total shrub cover is variable, ranging from 15-20% for open stands with 8-18% cover of Gutierrezia spp. to sparse stands with 3-10% shrub cover (Gutierrezia sarothrae with 1-7% cover and/or Gutierrezia microcephala with 3-5%). Trees are generally lacking although occasional Tamarix chinensis or Juniperus osteosperma may be present with trace cover. Other shrubs present with sparse to low cover may include scattered Acacia greggii, Artemisia filifolia, Atriplex confertifolia, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, Coleogyne ramosissima, Ephedra aspera, Ericameria nauseosa, Lycium andersonii, Opuntia phaeacantha, Opuntia polyacantha, or Yucca baccata. If present the herbaceous layer is generally sparse and composed of weedy, often exotic annual and short-lived perennial species. Stands occur on plateaus, benches, hills, slopes, valley bottoms, and along washes/drainage channels. Sites are flat to gently sloping and between 1100 and 1900 m elevation. Soils are variable, ranging from sands to silty clay loams derived from eolian or alluvial deposits, shales or sandstone.
