Name: Pinus edulis - Juniperus osteosperma / Symphoricarpos longiflorus Woodland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This rare pinyon-juniper woodland has been sampled in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in the Colorado Plateau. It is characterized by a moderately dense tree canopy of Juniperus osteosperma and Pinus edulis. The mixed shrub understory is only slightly dominated by Symphoricarpos longiflorus. Other shrubs present include Amelanchier utahensis, Cercocarpus intricatus, Mahonia fremontii, Ephedra viridis, Shepherdia rotundifolia, Coleogyne ramosissima, Gutierrezia sarothrae, and Opuntia spp. Common herbaceous species include Comandra umbellata, Tetraneuris acaulis, and Lepidium montanum. Stands occur on gently sloping canyon rims or canyon bottoms between 1631 and 1640 m elevation. Bare soil, litter, and biological soil crusts cover most of the unvegetated surface, with sparse cover of bedrock, sand, and wood. Soils are rapidly drained loamy sands derived from Cedar Mesa sandstone.
