Description: This spring-fed wet shrubland is dominated by <i>Betula occidentalis</i>, in relictual refugia found in desert springs. It is known from the southern Colorado Plateau of southern Utah and northern Arizona. Other shrubs present include <i>Amelanchier utahensis, Garrya flavescens, Quercus gambelii, Cornus sericea, Rosa woodsii, Frangula betulifolia, Fraxinus anomala, Salix exigua</i>, and <i>Rhus trilobata</i>. Herbaceous cover can be sparse to abundant. Common species include spring indicators such as <i>Adiantum capillus-veneris, Calamagrostis scopulorum, Epipactis gigantea, Platanthera zothecina</i>, and <i>Aquilegia micrantha</i>. Other herbaceous species typical of wetland and riparian areas but not necessarily springs include <i>Maianthemum stellatum, Elymus elymoides</i>, and <i>Equisetum arvense</i>. It occurs on springs on slopes and in alcoves on sandstone, or shale substrates. Aspects are north or, if south, then in heavily shaded canyon locations. Elevation ranges from 1130 to 2022 m (3707-6690 feet).
