Name: Vitis arizonica Shrubland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network; it is also reported from Grand Canyon National Park. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found rarely in Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada, where it was sampled along rocky, spring-fed riparian drainage channels in mountains at mid elevations such as at Grapevine Canyon in the Newberry Mountains. Elevation ranges from approximately 750 to 800 m, and averages 786 m. Soils are primarily derived from granitoid parent material. Vegetation forms a dense shrub canopy in which the shrub cover ranges from 75 to 98%. An emergent tree layer is typically absent and the herb understory is variable and ranges from 12 to 44% cover. Vitis arizonica is dominant or codominant in the shrub canopy, and Salix exigua may be codominant in this layer. Other shrubs often to sometimes present include Baccharis sergiloides, Acacia greggii, Pluchea sericea, and Viguiera parishii. The herbaceous layer is variable, including Phragmites australis as a dominant or codominant herb, and other commonly associated herbs include Bromus tectorum, Marah macrocarpus, and Amsinckia tessellata.
