Description: These are shrub balds dominated by stands of a variety of deciduous <i>Rhododendron</i> species, including primarily <i>Rhododendron calendulaceum</i> and <i>Rhododendron cumberlandense</i>, as well as <i>Rhododendron arborescens</i> and <i>Rhododendron viscosum</i>, and various interspecific and interploidy hybrids among these species. Examples are known from Gregory Bald in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (primarily North Carolina, possibly Tennessee), Copper Ridge Bald (near Burningtown Bald), Wayah Bald, and Wine Spring Bald in the Nantahala National Forest (North Carolina). In addition, <i>Rhododendron catawbiense, Menziesia pilosa, Vaccinium corymbosum, Rubus allegheniensis</i>, and <i>Rubus canadensis</i> may also be present.
