Name: Eucalyptus spp. Ruderal Forest Alliance
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This alliance consists of planted (and now abandoned) or naturalized groves of Eucalyptus species. At least nine species occur in California: Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus cladocalyx, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus polyanthemos, Eucalyptus pulverulenta, Eucalyptus sideroxylon, Eucalyptus tereticornis, Eucalyptus viminalis, and Corymbia citriodora. Understories in groves of these fast-growing, long-lived trees are usually depauperate. A buildup of allelopathic chemicals in the soil and high volumes of debris inhibit establishment of other plants, though sometimes other non-natives, such as Hedera helix, or natives, such as Toxicodendron diversilobum, clamber extensively in stands. Seeds of Eucalyptus germinate when tree crowns and built-up debris are removed by fire or in other ways. Tree stumps sprout readily from the lignotuber when trees are felled. This alliance is found throughout coastal mountains and the central valley of California into Baja California, Mexico.
