The understory is variable, usually characterized by <i>Carex stricta, Carex lacustris</i>, and a number of other graminoids and forbs, with a canopy of <i>Acer rubrum</i>. The vegetation is highly variable and dynamic, usually a successional stage resulting from disturbance, or occurring on the edges of larger wetlands.
