Description:
This alliance contains basins, swales, moats of bog mats, and pondshores typically dominated by <i>Dulichium arundinaceum</i>. Communities in this alliance typically occur in basins of porous substrate where the water level drops significantly during dry years. Substrate is variously mucky or sandy. Typical communities also contain a mix of low grasses, sedges, rushes, and scattered shrubs. This vegetation type occurs as a narrow zone in semipermanently flooded or saturated conditions along pond borders, bog moats, and other areas where minerotrophic conditions exist. Associated species are variable depending upon ecological and geographic conditions, but often include <i>Bidens</i> spp., <i>Carex canescens, Carex lasiocarpa, Carex stricta, Carex utriculata, Dulichium arundinaceum, Juncus pelocarpus</i>, and other <i>Juncus</i> spp. <i>Sphagnum</i> mosses (<i>Sphagnum cuspidatum, Sphagnum papillosum</i>, or <i>Sphagnum torreyanum</i>) generally form a continuous, often monotypic carpet. This alliance may also occur in seasonally flooded vegetation, and in this setting extends from New England southward. In these seasonally flooded situations, the vegetation is dominated by <i>Dulichium arundinaceum</i> in association with sedges and grasses. Aquatic species <i>Sphagnum cuspidatum</i> and/or <i>Sphagnum fallax</i> form a pronounced nonvascular layer overlying peat of variable depth. Associated species include <i>Carex canescens, Eriophorum virginicum, Glyceria acutiflora, Glyceria obtusa, Triadenum fraseri</i>, and <i>Triadenum virginicum</i>.
