Description: This alliance is currently described from Death Valley, California. It forms an open shrub layer and the overall shrub cover ranges from approximately 7 to 15%. The tree layer, if present, is sparse, and the herb layer is sparse to open. Nonvascular plants, if present, are sparse. The dominant and characteristic shrub is <i>Atriplex parryi</i>, and those that are often present include <i>Atriplex canescens, Atriplex confertifolia, Cylindropuntia echinocarpa, Psorothamnus polydenius, </i>and <i>Stephanomeria pauciflora</i>. Herbs that are often present are <i>Achnatherum hymenoides, Cleomella obtusifolia, Dicoria canescens, Distichlis spicata, Salsola</i> spp., and <i>Sporobolus airoides</i>. The alliance occurs at low to high elevations (550-1300 m) in alkaline basins, adjacent sand dunes, and alkaline spring sites of variable slope and aspect. Soils are sand and silt loam derived from conglomerate and dune sand.
