Name: Opuntia spp. Colorado Plateau Shrubland Alliance Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: Clumps of <i>Opuntia</i> cacti dominate the community, with sparse to moderate cover by grasses and forbs growing within and between clumps. <i>Bromus tectorum</i> is the most common and abundant herbaceous species in this community, but even disturbed examples generally include some cover of native grasses and forbs, including <i>Achnatherum hymenoides, Bouteloua gracilis, Hesperostipa comata, Pleuraphis jamesii</i>, and <i>Sphaeralcea</i> spp. Cryptobiotic soil crusts may be well-developed in undisturbed sites. This alliance occurs throughout the Colorado Plateau in disturbed or extremely xeric sites with coarse soils.
